In recent years, Apple has been known for making products which are lackluster in features and are no significant improvement over their predecessors. However, the fact that apple are taking up a new strategy as rumors flood the market, we may see a great improvement in the upcoming iPhone 8. The rumors claim that Apple is working on AR/VR glasses (augmented reality/virtual reality), this means that the newest installation of the IPhone series which is the IPhone 8 may feature VR goggles, or perhaps AR glasses, a similar thing to Google Glass. Augmented reality or AR is relatively new, and was showcased in many games and applications, Pokémon Go featured AR Pokémon confirming that this technology is making its way to the mainstream, even though it wasn’t in the form of a standalone hardware but the concept was still presented. IPhone 8 VR rumors are also coming in, it may be that Apple wants to combat the long and great success of the android optimized or Android Specific Virtual Reality headsets especially the ones made by Samsung, the Samsung VR. We may be seeing an Apple version around the time of the Apple IPhone 8 release. What the rumors say Apple AR Apple’s upcoming projects may be a Google Glass-level augmented reality glasses, and according to a news outlet, Apple has already gone out and discussed this project with its hardware manufacturers and suppliers and started prototyping, we may actually see a launch of both the IPhone 8 and a Google-glass twin. Even though, it may seem that IPhone 8 and VR may not have a great match after all, even though it is a well-known fact that Virtual Reality provides a much more immersive experience as opposed to augmented reality or AR. Tim Cook said: “Most people don't want to lock themselves out from the world for a long period of time and today you can't do that because you get sick from it. With AR you can, not be engrossed in something, but have it be a part of your world, of your conversation. That has resonance." Apple VR Virtual reality has also been widely expressed by both the public and people in the tech community, it could be so that IPhone 8 along with VR headsets are in the works. Apple has taken a previously clunky idea and brought it to the mainstream. Even though Mobile Virtual Reality headsets are not particularly poor in design and features. But, considering the success of the Apple Watch even after Samsung had already brought forward their Apple watches showed the potential that even an accepted piece of technology can be restructured; sold to the public and made popular. Apple has also made a number of high-profile hires for a Virtual Reality project including Nick Thompson from Microsoft who is an engineer who worked on the augmented goggles called the HoloLens. And Doug Bowman, someone considered to be a leader in 3D user interfaces. Apple’s inclination towards AR over VR Even though the rumors of a VR device may be floating around but Apple has a working prototype but AR may also be in Apple’s Focus. Time Cook commented "AR I think is going to become really big. VR, I think, is not gonna be that big, compared to AR … How long will it take? AR gonna take a little while, because there’s some really hard technology challenges there. But it will happen. It will happen in a big way. And we will wonder, when it does [happen], how we lived without it. Kind of how we wonder how we lived without our [smartphones] today.” Apple buying VR-related Companies The original Xbox Kinect developers called PrimeSense was bought by Apple for $345 million, a huge amount, for technology which may or may not be used. Back in 2015 Apple also acquired Metaio, a German company which is popular in creating Augmented Reality systems, including the Ikea’s virtual catalogue and Ferrari’s AR app. FaceShit was also acquired by apple back in 2015 which is a company which allows CGI (computer generated) images to copy actor facial expressions, giving us possible links to VR or an AR headset. The IPhone 8 and VR/AR The latest upcoming IPhone, the IPhone 8 release may just have a new surprise for us, we are unsure whether than surprise will be the newest phone paired with VR goggles or AR glasses, but as time and time again has told us, we are always unsure what to expect when it comes to Apple. What suggests strongly that it will be paired with AR goggles is based on rumors that the latest acquired OLED panels will be transparent, allowing the creation of a Google-Glass twin. Especially considering that the AR market is still open and unsaturated. A Virtual Reality headset wouldn’t be a surprise either, the VR market is getting saturated and entering it right now may be a wise idea for Apple, especially considering the fact that there are already so many options available and it would be a missed opportunity otherwise. Price increase for upcoming IPhone 8 Apple has ordered a hundreds of millions OLED panels, not only did it set back Apple billions, it is also a sign that the upcoming phones are going to be priced higher than the previous models. It could be that Apple is preparing the release of the AR glasses this year. Even if we don’t observe new technology implemented in the IPhone 8, it is highly unlikely there isn’t going to be a price ramp-up, exclusively pointing towards the aforementioned extremely expensive OLED panel investment. As mentioned earlier, we are uncertain of Apple’s strategy to implement newer technologies into their upcoming devices but it is almost certain that either Apple VR or AR devices will be hitting the shelves. The question now is when will that be and for how much.
Can't wait for Apple VR. I believe it will be one of the best.
