Acer VR Headset:What & When to Expect

  • In 2016 Microsoft announced that it was working with a number of different developers such as Acer, ASUS, and Dell to develop mixed reality headsets. At this year's Game Developers Conference, Microsoft showed off the first fruits of its labour: A mixed reality headset from Acer VR headset. Means that the company is moving forward to try and grow its augmented and virtual reality aims beyond the Holo Lens headset.

First the company announced that it would be synergizing with device manufacturers for Windows Holographic products back in October.

What Is Mixed Reality In New Acer VR Headset 2017?

Mixed reality is basically a mixture of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality that can let you both bring real-world objects into a virtual environment and render virtual objects in a real-world space. It relies on cameras attached to an otherwise standard-looking VR headset so both your body and head motions can be tracked alongside objects around you, like a chair or a door or something you’re holding in your hand. Intel is also working on something similar with its Project Alloy headset (though the company likes to use the phrase “merged” instead of mixed reality).

Mixed reality = cameras and tracking?

Microsoft’s idea of mixed reality is a roof covering practically everything from augmented (AR) to virtual reality (VR). And that's the way it should be. What happens when your virtual reality headset of future has the ability to see the real world and put holograms on it? The proper term used for this idea is mixed reality."

But the latest more affordable Windows mixed reality headsets, like Acer headset 2017, don't see the real universe quite the way you'd expect. Unlike Microsoft's Holo Lens, these headsets aren't cordless and do not have see-through visors. They're opaque, like Virtual Reality headsets, and tether to a Windows PC, or come 2018, an Xbox One or Project Scorpio game console, with a long cord.

    Acer VR Headset Price 2017

They cost about $300 (roughly £250 or AU$400 converted).

Because they contain several cameras and "six degrees of freedom" they track to work without any type of external sensors or markers, like the HoloLens, Microsoft wracking wants you to see them as something special. But you can expect many upcoming Virtual Reality headsets might also have those capabilities.

As Kipman agrees with his own definition of mixed reality, he says that the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are capable of mixed reality, too. He aims to take real-life scanned items and putting them in Virtual Reality, against taking virtual things and ptting them in the everyday real world (AR).

But as Microsoft's own demo showed us, an opaque, Virtual Reality-style headset can make a lot more thinking for a lot more software as of today. Where the Microsoft's Holo Lens developer kit has a narrow field of view that makes it concentration to see even an entire application window at once, much less an entire Windows desktop, that wasn't a problem with Microsoft's VR-style rig.

The latest Acer headsets 2017 will work with Holo Lens apps, display Windows Universal Apps, even launch traditional Win32 programs in a single "desktop" window -- and the wider field of view means there's no hunting around the room to find each one.

What we didn't see in the opaque headset demonstration yet: the Holo Lens-like ability to place those windows (and virtual 3D objects) onto digital representations of the real world.

Apart from the ACER VR headset 2017 reveal, The Microsoft Company also gave out a "golden chance" to everyone who attended the March gaming session in which they announced the Acer headset, giving them a free development kit. The company announced it has shipped additional units to various other developers as well. At the end, the company announced it is planning to bring mixed reality to "other devices over time, beyond desktop and Microsoft HoloLens," including the Project Scorpio.

    Acer VR Headset Release Date

As announced by Microsoft Acer headset will be released in October 2017.

Specs for the Acer headset 2017 Windows Mixed Reality Development Edition include:
    • Two high-resolution liquid crystal displays at 1440 x 1440
    • Display refresh rate up to 90 Hz (native)
    • Built-in audio out and microphone support through 3.5mm jackSingle cable with HDMI 2.0 (display) and USB 3.0 (data) for connectivity
One of the funny points to mention is that the Acer headset's visor can be flipped up and put back down, depending on the developer's need for easy transitioning between coding and testing. As someone that spends a good deal of time with my Holo Lens sitting on my head, sliding it back and forth, this is a very convenient option.

When Microsoft started the phased rollout of the developer kits this month, the kits will include the Acer headset 2017, along with documentation and access to Windows 10 Insider showing builds and the software development kit (SDK) to enable developers to build mixed reality applications.
